    Cancer hospital to have 300 beds: PM Khaleda lays foundation of new pvt cancer hospital

The 50-bed National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH) in the capital will be upgraded to a 300-bed modern hospital, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia announced yesterday while laying the foundations of a cancer cum general hospital in private sector.

Addressing a small gathering of medical oncologists (cancer specialists) and technologists, doctors, diplomats, government officials and guests at Uttara on this occasion, the prime minister said, "We have taken up plans to improve healthcare especially for the poor. The existing facilities including the number of cancer specialists are not sufficient and we are improving facilities for general people with particular focus on these aspects."

The 500-bed hospital is being set up by Dhaka Ahsania Mission (Dam) at a cost of Tk 108 crore. Construction of the 10-storey hospital building will be completed in three years.

Khaleda mentioned that to achieve the target of health for all her government has taken up a Tk 9,410-crore three-year programme of health, nutrition and population sector programme (HNPSP) with nutrition as a new component. Efforts are also on to fill up vacant posts of doctors, nurses and medical technologists and raise the number of hospital beds, she said.

Praising the initiative of the Dam, she called upon the affluent to help ensure free healthcare services for the poor.

Kazi Rafiqul Alam, executive director of the Dam, urged individuals, corporate houses and others to donate funds for establishment of the hospital. Many people who make donations also have to pay income tax on the donated money, he said, adding this should be waived to encourage donations.

Alam called for raising to Tk 30 crore from Tk 10 crore the social welfare ministry's allocation for the hospital in the annual development programme for this fiscal year.

He invited foreign medical oncologists to visit the hospital for transferring technology as part of its academic activities.

There are around 10 lakh cancer patients in the country and the number increases by about two lakh a year.

Director of the proposed hospital Prof MA Hai also addressed the function.

Health Minister Khandoker Mosharraf Hossain, Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Md Mujaheed and Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment State Minister Quamrul Islam were present on the occasion.

    Ahsania Mission-The Daily Star- Prothom Alo raises Tk 6cr for cancer hospital


In its pursuit to build the biggest cancer hospital in the country under private sector initiatives, Dhaka Ahsania Mission (Dam) continues its fund-raising campaign with the assistance of country's two leading national dailies -- The Daily Star and The Prothom Alo.

So far, Ahsania Mission received donations worth Tk 6cr 5 lakh and 25 thousand from various business entities and individual philanthropists for constructing the 160-bed Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital at Uttara in the city.

Besides, Ahsania Mission also received Tk 90 lakh and 87,636 from donors for further expansion of the existing Ahsania Mission Cancer Detection Centre and Hospital at Mirpur.

The Mission is aiming to launch the 160-bed cancer hospital at a cost of Tk 85.28 crore by 2008. The hospital will eventually be made a 500-bed facility, a scheme that will require Tk 108.37 crore.

Dhaka Ahsania Mission approached The Daily Star and the Prothom Alo to assist in the highest ever fund raising campaign for a cancer hospital resulting in a partnership between the Mission and the two leading dailies. So far the joint campaign has received in donations as detailed below
