Although a considerable progress has been made in controlling communicable diseases, no significant activity towards the control and treatment of cancer is visible. There are around 800 thousand people living with cancer in the country while the existing facilities can provide treatment to only 10-15 thousand patients in a year. It may be noted here that approximately 200 thousand new cases are being added every year to this already staggering number. Due to explosive growth of population, changes in life styles, growing urbanization and environmental degradation etc. cancer is emerging as a major health concern.

Dhaka Ahsania Mission, a National Level NGO in Consultative Status with United Nation Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) and in Operational Relations with UNESCO, considers that through appropriate education, awareness building and preventive measures as well as through regular screening process cancer can be avoided or prevented in many cases or at least minimized and that if cancer can be detected early, it can be better managed. However, little has been done in Bangladesh in the field of prevention, detection / treatment and research on cancer. On this backdrop Dhaka Ahsania Mission, an organization committed to humanitarian services, has come forward to establish a Cancer Hospital (Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital) in Dhaka, equipped with modern equipments and trained doctors and nurses for diagnosis, treatment and research on cancer.

Ahsania Mission Cancer Detection and Treatment Centre

A Cancer Detection and Treatment Centre has already been established in July, 2001, for Detection and Treatment of Cancer. This Cancer Detection and Treatment Centre has now 30,000 sft floor space, 42 Beds, Two Operation Theatres, a Day Care Chemotherapy Unit, X-Ray and Imaging facilities, Mammography Machine and essential logistic support and a group of experienced Cancer Specialists for detection and treatment of cancer. Upto Dec. 2003 about 15000 patients have been taken care of. This is also generally known as Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital (AMCH).
